I’ve gone to two bridal showers in the past month now for close friends and made them both cakes. For the first cake I used the hot milk cake recipe from my Miette cookbook. For some reason these cakes always divot really badly so I had to use both cakes to make one have enough even layers. I then used my favorite icing, Italian meringue buttercream but replaced half of the butter with browned butter. I made the brown butter, lemon simple syrup ( to brush the cakes) and a blackberry compote ( mashed blackberries, sugar and lemon juice) the night before so they could spend some quality time with the refrigerator. The assembly was pretty simple; brush the cake with simple syrup, make the pearly ( or rope looking for the second cake) border, make a dam, fill with fruit compote. The second cake was the same with assembly, but I used this cake recipe and added a little fondant anchor !
