Basta Pasta is an Asian owned Italian restaurant.It is in the Chelsea neighborhood on 17th street between 5th and 6th ave. My sister and father happened upon this place about 5 years ago and have not been back since, but I remembered them talking about it so requested a visit on my last trip to NYC. Our friend started with the Tortina de Granchio which was avocado, apples, potatoes, and crab topped with a grapefruit jelly. It was light, refreshing, and beautifully plated but the grapefruit jelly held almost no flavor. He also ordered the grilled calamari which I did not try but he said was tasty. My husband ordered the fusilli al Pollo Organico, which was pasta with an organic chicken ragu and sliced prociutto. It was very average, but a decent portion size. My sister had the Crespelle con Funghi e Ricotta. We both had our eye on it so we split our orders and shared. This dish was disappointing, the pasta was thicker than any handkerchief pasta I’ve had before and I thought there would be more of a sauce. As you can see in the picture the mushrooms look as if they were thrown overtop and then dollops of ricotta were added. I ordered the Spaghetti con Prosciutto e Parmigiano which was basically spaghetti served in a giant half wheel of cheese. They shave off cheese from the sides and the heat from the pasta melts more cheese while they toss. All of this is done table side (it seemed like someone at every table ordered this). It is topped with thin prosciutto and tastes like the most simple comfort food. How can you beat a ton of cheese and prosciutto? I would probably go back if I was in the area and looking for a decent priced meal. It is an ok place but definitely a good bang for your buck !
